Most beginner books say あ sounds like "ah" and stop. These pages show which English words actually match the Japanese sound — and which ones don't. か matches the vowel in car and calm, but not cake. You get IPA for accuracy and plain English so you don't need a linguistics degree.
The two pronunciation pages above are a sample of a bigger book — My First Japanese Words (151 pages, 2nd Edition) gives all 46 characters the same treatment: IPA, matching English words, the ones that don't match, stroke order, and room to practice. If that's the kind of thing you'd keep around, it's on Amazon. Either way, the starter pack above is yours to keep.
